This HEADLINE SERIES consists of five articles on
the United Nations by Thomas J. Hamilton,
UN correspondent of The New York Times, pub-
lished by that newspaper in December 1960 and
reprinted here with its permission; an introduc-
tory statement specially prepared by Mr. Hamil-
ton for this issue of the HEADLINE SERIES; and
excerpts from the statement made by Adlai E.
Stevenson, United States ambassador to the UN,
when he testified before the Senate Foreign Rela-
tions Committee on January 18. Mr. Hamilton
prepared the list of readings, in which he in-
cluded books and magazine articles he has found
most useful during the 15 years he has reported
on the work of the UN.
