Report of the Commission for the Protection

of Women and Children in the Near East

                                       ALEPPO

                           July 1st, 1926 - June 30th, 1927.

The work of the Commission has, during the year, met with much sympathy and encourage-
ment, and has therefore progressed successfully.
The French Government has been supporting us whole-heartedly.
We have met with no difficulty or resistance from any special element of the native population.
The interest in the work has been steadily increasing, and has manifested itself in very generous
contributions.
From July 1st, 1926, to May 31st, 1927, we have received the following sums:
    British Societies: £
        Lord Mayor's Fund . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 4,000
        Armenian Ladies Guild . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 565
        Friends of Armenia . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 190
        Bible Lands Society. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 100
    Germany:
        Dr. Lepsius' Mission 28,020 Mk. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 1,400
    Other sources . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 115

                                                           Total . . 6,370
The result has been that the number of the rescued has exceeded that of former years - we
have had 325, the largest achievement in any past year being 300 - and we have been able to effect
many very difficult rescues, which we could certainly not have touched in earlier days, because we
could neither have conquered the Social obstacles nor have met the expense.

                                    AREAS EXPLORED.

All our stations are working with great vigour and success. We do not doubt that, as far as
Syrian territory is concerned, practically all the deported women and children, detained since the
war against their will among the Moslems, will have been offered an opportunity to return to their
own people, before, in December 1927, we finally close the stations.
Those who remain have chosen to stay. They mostly consist of women who have given birth
to children, whom naturally they cannot leave.
The north-eastern corner of Syria, the region around Nissi bin, is an exception. In this area
we have opened no station.
Thanks to the presence of the French troops, this year the conditions in this remote and rather
wild region were so far settled that we might have taken up the work ; but our experiences in
our old areas have shown us that a station which can only be kept open one year does more harm
than good.
It not only incurs great expense, but, in addition, it creates unrest and awakens expectations
in the minds of many people whom in such a limited time it is not able to rescue, and who would
be left unhappier than they were before.
For these reasons, we have refrained from opening up a new area and have confined ourselves to
our old stations, where we are thankful to say that we have succeeded in doing very thorough work.
