,On the 15th day of January, WHALiAm A. ]xwRTOW having been
inaugurated into office on the 7th of the same month, and CoI
BAsniOiRD having taken the oath of cfice the same day, the follow-
ing information was filed ii the Supreme Court:

Win. I. Smith, Attorney Genieral of Lite State of Wisconsin, who sues
for the people of the State in this behalt conies into the Supreme Court of
the said State, before the Justices thereof, at the Capitol, in the village of
Madison, in the county of Dane, in the said State, on the 15th day of Jan-
uary, A. D. 1856, and for the said people of the State of Wisconsin, at tie
relation of Coles I3ashford, of the city of Oshkosh, in the county of Win-
nebagro in the said State, accordig to the form of the statute in such case
made.and pliovided, gims the said Court here to understand, and be informed
that Wm. A. Barstow, of the county of Waukesha, in the said State of
Wisconsin, for the space of one day and upwards now last past, hath held,
used and exercised, afid still doth hold, use and exercise the offloo of 46 -
ernor of the State of Wisconsin, without any legal election, appointment, war-
rant or authority whatsoever therefor ; and the said Attorney General fiurther
gives the Court here to understand and be informed, that at a general elec-
tion for State officers of said State, held at the several eleQtion districts of
said State, in the several counties thereof, on the 6th day of :November, A.
D. 1855, the said Coles 3ashford was duly elected and chosen Governor of
.the State of Wisconsin aforesaid, and tiat the said Coles Bashford hath ever
since been and still is rightfully entitled to hold, use and exercise said offib;e;
which said office of Governor of the State of Wisconsin aforesaid, the sa'd
Win. A. Barstow, duing all the timie aforesaid, and since the time of said
.olection bath usurped, intruded into and unlawfully held and, exercised, to
*wit: at Madison, in the county of Dane aforw(ai1, and still doth uhurp, in-
trude into, and unlawfully hold and ex~roise, to wit : at Madison, in the
county of Dane aforesaid, in contempt of t4o people of 'the State.of .Wis-
consin, aid to their great.damage and prejudice; whereupon said Atto'ney
