-Deposition of Jeremiah H. Holmes.
The deposition of Jeremiah H. Holmes, taken at the request
of the claimants, before John F. Callan, commissioner for
the District of Columbia, at his office in Washington city,
to be used in the investigation of a claim against the
United States, now pending in the Court of Claims, in the
name of Baker & Folsom vs. The United States.
First general interrogatory by the commissioner:
Please to state your name, your occupation, your age, your
place of residence the past year; whether you have any in-
terest, direct or indirect, in the claim which is the subject of
inquiry; and whether, and in what degree, you are related to
the claimants?
Answer.-My name is Jeremiah H. Holmes; my occupa-
tion, a sea-faring man; my age is thirty-three years; my
residence the past year, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, when
ashore; I have no interest, direct or indirect, in the claim
which is the subject of inquiry; and am in no degree related
to the claimants.
Being interrogated by D. F. Murphy, Esq., for the claim-
ants, the witness says:
On the 27th of February, 1865, I was captain of the brig
Edwin H. Fitler, of Philadelphia, owned by Baker & Fol-
