Tho history of this case is given at length in the report of
the Auditor, (p. 3,) and on the Paper Book of Daniel Man.
It may be briefly stated thus :-Charles F. Sibbald, having
obtained a grant of land from the Governor of Florida in 1816,
made two contracts with Samuel Grice in 1827-8, for cutting
timber, &c. Pending these contracts, the Government of the
United States interfered to prevent the cutting of the timber,
and in 1830, (the contracts with Grice having nearly a year to
run,) Sibbald executed a general assignment to W. L. Jaudon,
in trust for creditors, who should release within 24 days, &c.
Shortly after, (Sep. 27, 1830,) Sibbald filed his petition for the
insolvent laws. The Supreme Court of the United States
having confirmed Sibbald's title to the lands, in 1836 he me-
morialised Congress for compensation for his damages by
reison of the interference of the Government. Pending the pro-
ceedings on his memorial, he commenced issuing certificates or
assignments to different persons, in anticipation of the damages
which might be awarded, and in 1843 executed a deed, making
Joseph R. Ingersoll and Thomas Dunlap, Esqs., the trustees
for the certificate holders. After a variety of proceedings, the
