Your petitioner, the City of Carondelet of the State or
Missouri, respectfully sh'ws, that a tra(!t of land, situated
in the County of St. Louis, within said state, known as
the Commons of Carondelet, and shown in the copy of
the official survey, herewith filed, marked C, was granted
by the Spanish government to the inhabitants of the vil-
lage of Carondelet, and the government of the United
States, as part of the consideration for the cession of the
territory in which this land lies, by the government of
France, stipulated in the 3d article of the treaty of 1803
that the inhabitants shall be maintained and protected
in the free enjoyment of their liberty, property, and in
the religion which they profess.
That, in pursuancc of said treaty s:ipulation, a series
of acts have been passed by Congress to assure said in
habitants in their lands, and among others the act enti-
tied An act to make further provision for settling
claims to land in the territory of Missouri, approved1
June 13th, 1812, by the first section of which the Corn-
mons of Carondelet were confirmed to the inhabitants of
said village. And in order to determine the extent and
boundaries of the tract so granted or confirmed, it was
made the duty of the principal deputy surveyor for said
territory to survey, or cause to be surveyed and marked,
the out-boundary lines f said commons
