FOR THE MURDER OF
LIEUT. A. L. SANBORN, July 1 Ith, 1868.
On the afternoon of Saturday July 11, 1863, the city of Norfolk,
Va., was thrown into the most intense excitement, by one of its,
most prominent and distinguished citizens, Dr. David M. Wright,
shooting down, in one of the principal streets of the city, an officer
of' the United States Army, at the head of'his men. The officer,
Ii'ut. A. L. Sanborn, staggered into a store, and iminmediately ex-
pired. Dr. Wright was taken before the Provost Marshal, and after
the examination of a number of witnesses, was committed to jail.
After a few weeks in jail, a trial befoare a special military commission,
of seven or eight days, r'4Ilted in convicting hint of murder, which
was submitted to the President fbr approval or rejection. He was
then remanded to jail.
The President havirig approved the sentence, the execution took
place at the Fair Grounds, Nort0idk, Friday, Oct. 23d, at 10 o'clock,
A. M., under the inmediate siipervision of Brig. Gen. Jas. Barnes.
The cortege, after the following order, left the prison at nine o'clock,
and reached the place of execution it tln minutes to ten o'clock:-
Full Drum Corps-solemn music; A squad of the 11th Pa. Caval-
ry; Officers mouuted ; 118th R    Ngt. N.Y. Vols. ; Hearse, eontain-
ing the coffin; Carriage, containing Capt. Shepherd, Assist. Provost
Marshal, Rev. Mr. Rodwian, rector of Christ Church, Rev. Mr. Park-
nan, of Baltimore, and the prisoner; Carriage, containing-Rev. Mr.
Okesoni, rector of St. Paul's Church. and Rev. Mr. Hubard ; Pro-
vost Guard, as side carriage c;,cort ; Officers of the 21st Cnn. 1 'egt.
21st Co111. Regt. ; OflieC(s niounted.
The gallows was er-cted in the middle of the trial horse track,
and fronting the Exhibition Hall, built in the most substantial man-
ier, sixteen feet high, of pine awli oak. 'On i te groune, t'ornied into
