'MATTER OF THE CONTESTED ELECTIONS
Of Mayor, District Attorney, City Solicitor, City Controller,
Receiver of Taxes, City Commissioner, and Prothonotary of
the Court of Common Pleas, petitions were severally filed of
record. Saturday, November 14, 1868, by appointment of the
Judges of the Court of Common Pleas, was fixed upon for a
formal presentation of the subject matters of complaint, and
the required ten days' nont, ordered to be given to the parties
holding offices about to be contested.
The petitions in 'the several cases are substantially identical
in detail, except as to the numbers of votes cast in the different
election divisions. The following in the case of the Receiver of
Taxes, presents probably all the items embraced in the com-
plaints:
To the ilonorable the Judges of the Oourt of Common Pleas of
the County of Philadelphia :
The petition and complaint of the undersigned respectfully
show, that they are citizens and qualified electors of the City
and County of Philadelphia, and that a general election was
held therein, on the second Tuesday of October, Anno Domini
eighteen hundred and sixty-eightf; and that they voted at the
said general election therein, for the office of Receiver of
Taxes.
Your petitioners further show, that it has been returned that
at said election John M. Melloy received sixty thousand eight
