The men whose names and ratings are given below, late a part of
the crew of the United States steamer Mercedita, were recently tried
by a Naval General Court Martial, convened at Philadelphia, viz:
1. Edward Grayson, ship's cook.
9. Wm. H. Dunbar, captain's steward.
3. Joseph Plant, officers' cook.
4. Carl Schmidt, seaman.
5. Hugh Conner, seaman.
6. Charles Evans, seanan.
7. Tonnos A. Tonnoson, ordinary seamian.
8. John Keyes, ordinary seaman.
9. Win. H. McIntosh, ordinary seaman.
10. James Lowe, ordinary seaman.
11. Edward Whitney, ordinary seaman.
12. Henry Adams, ordinary seaman.
13. Patrick McMahon, landsman.
The charge, iu each case, was, that the accused, on or about the 31st
day of January, in the year 1863, deserted his station on board the U.
S. steamer M~rncdita, off Charleston, S. C., and left the said steamer,
in. a boat, without orders or perrnssiqn.
The accused were all found guilty, and each received the same
sentence, viz :
To forfeit all his .pay after the 31st day of January, in the year
1863, Vid to be confined at hard labor, in such prison as may be
designated by the Ho,. Secretary of the Navy, for the term of five
years. This sentence to be read on board every vessel in commission
and on all receiving ships.
On coucluding the Jast of these cases, the Court Martial addressed
to the Secretary of the Navy a communication, in these words:
SIR: Having closed the proceedings of the Court in the case of the
Mercedita, we-feel bound to-call the notice of the .revising power to
character,' swqrn, to by the, fficers as being excellent, some of them
extraordinarily so.
