o THE NOMINATION OF
MARTIN VAN BIJUEN,
TO BE MINISTER OF THE UNITED STATES TO GREAT BRITAIN.
Tills debate took place mainly on the 241h and 25th of January, 1S32, and,
aecording to the rules of the Senate, in S-ret Session. After the question was
decided, the injunction of secrecy'was removed, by a vote of the Senate, from
the debates as well as the proceedings in this case. In consequence of which,
the following proceeding and authentic sketches of speeches delivered in that
debate were published il the National Intelligencer and other papers.
EXTRACT FRONt THE SENATE JOURNAL.
DECEDMIEn 7, 1831.
A MESSAGE was received from the President of the United States, nominating MA11TI
VAN BUREN, of New York, to be Envoy Extraordinary and Minister Plenipotentiary of tile
United States at the Court of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland.
The message was read.

Ordered, That the nomination of MARI'N VAN BenvN be ueferred to the Committee oil
Foreign Relations.
TUESDAY, JANUARY 10, 1832.
Mr. TAZEWELL, fi'om the Committee on Foreign Relations, to whom was referred the
nomination of MARTIN VAN BEnER, reported.
TUESDAY, JANUARY 13.
The following motion, snbmitted by Mr. HOLMES, was taken up for consideration:
Resolved, That the nonfiiation of MARTIN VAN BUREN be recommitted to the Committee
Oil Foreign Relations; and thatsaid Committee be instructed to investigate the causes which
produced tile removal of the late Secretaries ofthe TreAsury anfl the Navy Departments,
and of the Attorney General of the United States, anti also the resignations of the Secre-
taries of the State and War Departments; and report to the Senate whether the only causes
of that novel and important poltical movement pre given in the letters of the President of
the United States, addressed on that occasion to the several officers above enumerated; and,
if not, what were the causes to which these removals and resignations ought to be ascribed.
And also, whether the said Martin Van Buren, then Secretary of State, 'participated in any
practices disreputable to the national character, which were designed to operate on tile
mind of the President of the United States, and calculated to smooth the way to his ap.
pointment to the high office to which he has been nominated.
Resolved, That for the purpose of carrying into effect the objects of tile preceding reso-
lution, the said Committee be further authorized to send for persons and papers, and to
compel the attendance before them of such witness or witnesses as they may desire to ex-
amine on oath, touching the matter submitted to their investigation; and to report tie same
to the Senate, with their opinion thereon, together with tile nomination aforesaid.
A debate ensued; and, oil motion by Mr. HOLMES,
Ordered, That it lie on the table.
The Senat& then proceeded to consider the nomination of MARTIN -AN Bunmy.
On motion that it lie on the table,
It was determined in th afirnative, Yeas 21, Nays 21, as folows:
