If ihere ever was a doubt concerning the
oft-repented statement that H1. H. Holimes,
the alleged multl-murderer, Is the most re-
mAnrkable man of nerve af the century that
doubt was dlsp.lied yesterday, when, deserted
by his counsul at the last moment, he toor
his hfe in his own hands and announced that
he would defend himself In his trial on the
charge of killing Benjamin F. Pilezel, at 1381
Callowhill street, on beptember 2, a year
ago.
