In presenting GEORGE MELVILLE to the Public, the publishers
are confident that it will meet with an unusually favorable recep-
tion. Advance sheets have been read by men of high literary
attainments, whose occupation brings them in contact with all
the current literature of the day, and pronounced by them
A Book of Great Originality and Merit,

And, as a first effort, stands UNRIVALLED. Indeed we offer our candid opinion,
that no writer has ever succeeded better with a first attempt than has the Author
of GEORGE MELVILLE with his. Every page is studded with beautiful gems, not
only of thought, but of language ; every sentiment the most fastidious cannot fail
to indorse; and every character occupies, from beginning to end, his true posi-
tion. Of this work it can be said, as it cannot be said of every novel, that the
interest is not allowed to flag, but continues to increase until the reader is com-
pletely borne away by the excitement of the plot and the noble language in
which it is illustrated. Upon arriving at the conclusion, while he must regret
that there is an end to so rich a treat, yet he cannot help saying that not another
line is needed to render it complete.
Its style is good, perspicuous, and varied-many of its descriptions and
pictures are very graphic ; the college scenes of the early chapters are true
to the life, and all the various characters who figure in the after-plot, are
well-sustained.'--Educatioval Herald.
It is a well-written work, and calculated to enlighten the mind upon the
uncertainty of good resulting from the lavish expenditure of money upon
young gentlemen, while pursuing collegiate studies.-Brooklyn Star.
GEORGE MELVILLE is a work of merit, and well worthy a large number of
purchasers. There is apt to be in works of fiction a sameness in the plot and
characters ; we all have, perhaps, seen the receipt for the making of a modern
novel, given as would be the receipt for making a card of gingerbread ; but
this book is not one of that kind ; its characters and scenery are varied, and
the reader is carried through the story very pleasantly.- Sentine 4- Witness.
W think GEORGE MELVILLE a book of great interest and spirit, and one
that brings out in a strong light some peculiar traits of American character.
