The further answer of John F. Winslow, one of the defendants in
this cause, to that part of the 12th Interrogatory propounded to him
by the complainants for his examination as a party as against him- 8032
self only, which requires him to state the kind of spikes which have
for the most part been cut on each of the spike machines in use at
the defendants' Works, from the 14th of October, 1845, to the 18th
of January, 1853 ; which answer is made in pursuance of an order
of the Master pro hac vice, upon the allowance by him of the com-
plainants' exception to that part of said interrogatory.
For further answer to that part of the said 12th Interrogatory,
which requires this defendant to state the kind of spikes which have 8033
for the most part been cut on each of the spike machines in use at
the defendants' Works, from the 14th of October, 1845, to the 18th
of January, 1853, he says that the kind of spikes which were for
the most part cut on each of said machines, during that period of
time, were a kind of hook-headed spikes made out of a very high
quality of American iron made into spike rods for that purpose,
which were the only kind of hook-headed spikes made thereon.
