A single condemnation, without regard to law, whether in its forms or its princi-
ples, is more dangerous to society, than the escape of a thousand malefactors; for such
a condemnation, in over-earnestness to punish the guilty may become a precedent,
which shall open the door to abuses, subversive of all legal protection to the innocent.
