NTC Finds Inflation Still Tops Fiscal Problems

NTC Renames Steve Stahl Chairman,
Evaluation Report Due This Fall
Steve Stahl was re-elected unanimously for
another term as chairman of the NTC, following a
report of a nominations committee headed by Al
Burger, Texas.
The NTC passed another related resolution by
the Burger committee proposing that a group of
three to five taxpayer directors to be named by the
chairman, in collaboration with Robert W. French
of Tax Foundation, to evaluate present NTC or-
ganization and procedures and make recommenda-.
tions by early Fall of this year.

Secretary of the Cabinet Robert K. Gray had high
praise and a warning for the NTC at the opening
dinner of the annual Washington meeting.

Shapes Policy to Combat Threat
The National Taxpayers Conference, after a
close look into Federal fiscal problems at its annual
meeting in Washington, D. C. February 8-10, agreed
that the threat of increased inflation is still danger-
ous, still the No. 1 problem of the era.
Concern for the role Federal fiscal decisions can
play in encouraging inflation was given top billing
in a policy statement unanimously adopted by the
Conference which is made up of 36 state taxpayer
associations. Outlined was an NTC program for the
coming year that calls for:
COMBATTING INFLATION with sharp controls
on government spending, particularly Federal spend-
ing. Outright rejection of the notion economic growth
must be stimulated by increased Federal spending
and by further intervention of the Federal government
in the economy -- a path that can lead only to more
inflation or higher taxes on everyone.
A SUBSTANTIAL BUDGET SURPLUS insured
by compensating reductions to offset any in-
creases in proposed expenditures, or reductions in
