MODEL CITIES: FEDERAL PROGRAMS
The Model Cities Administration, headed by a Director under the Assistant
Secretary for Demonstrations and Intergovernmental Relations, Department
of Housing and Urban Development, is responsible for the administration
of the Model Cities Program under Title I of the Demonstration Cities
and Metropolitan Development Act of 1966.

1965 (Statutes at Large, Vol. 79, 89th Cong., 1st sess., 1965, pp. 667-671).
The Congress declares that the general welfare and security of the
Nation and the health and living standards of the people require sound
development of the Nation's communities and metropolitan areas. To carry out
such purpose the above executive department is established.
An act making supplemental appropriations for the fiscal year ending June 30,
1967....Public Law 89-697. October 27, 1966 (Statutes at Large, Vol. 80,
Pt. 1, 89th Cong., 2d sess., 1966, pp. 1057-1066).
On page 1059 there is an appropriation for the City Demonstration
Program, if enacted later in session.
Demonstration Cities and Metropolitan Development Act of 1966. Public Law 89-754.
November 3, 1966 (Statutes at Large, Vol. 80, Pt. 1, 89th Cong.,2d sess.,
1966, 1255-1296).
An act to assist comprehensive city demonstration programs for rebuild-
ing slum and blighted areas and for providing public facilities and services
necessary to improve the general welfare of the people who live in those
areas, to assist and encourage planned metropolitan development and for other
purposes. Appropriations are given on page 1260.
