the State of Vermont., at their Seffions at
Windfor, June 2d, A. D. 1779.
An Act to prevent Perfons from exercising       Authority, unlefs
lawfully authorifed by this State.
W     HEREAS there are divers Perfons within this State, who have oppo-
fed and do continue to oppofe the Government thereof; and who do,
by every Way and Means in their Power, endeavor to obftruct the free
Exercife of the Powers of Government within thefame:               Preamblc
WHICH Mifohief to prevent,
BE it enacted, and it is hereby enacted by the Reprefentatives of the Free-
men of the State of Vermont, in General Affembly met, and by the
Authori6y of the fame, That if any Perfon within this State (except Penalty on
Continental Officers) fhall, after the firft Day of September next, accept, Officers ex-
hold, or exercife any Office, either civil or military, from or under any erfing au-
Authority, other than is or fhall be derived from this State, and be derived from
thereof duly convicted, fhall, for the firft Offence, pay a Fine not exceed- this State.
ing One Hundred Pounds lawful Money, according to the Difcretion of
the Court which may have Cognizance thereof.
AND for the fecond Offence of the like Kind, shall be whipped on the
naked Body not exceeding Forty Stripes, according to the Difcretion of 2d offence.
the Court before whom they are profecuted.
AND for the third Offence, fhall have their right Ear nailed to a Poft, 8d offence.
and cut off; and be branded in the Forehead with the Capital Letter C,
on a hot Iron.
THIS Act to continue in Force until the Rifing of the Affembly in
October 1780, and no longer.
