At a GENERAL ASSEMBLY begun and.held at the Capitol in the
City of Williamsburg, on Monday the 5th day of OIobr, in the
Year of our Lord 1778.

I. '7OR prevefiting the farther importation of flaves into this commonwealth, Be it enaliedby the Geheral
1: 4embly, that frorm and after the palling of this ad no flave or flaves Ihall hereafter be imported
into this commonwealth by fea or land, nor fhall aiiy flaves fo imported be [old or bought by any petfon
whatfoever.
I. EVERY perfon hereafter importing flaves into this commonwealth contrary to this af hall forteit
and pay the fumn of one t.houfand pounds for every lave to imported, and every perfon felling or buyiag
any fuch flares fhall in like manner forfeit and pay the num of five huindred pounds for every Have f) fold
or bought, one moiety of which forfeitures llaU be to the tife of the commonwealth, and the other
