CHAPTER                 1.
!P  ACT providing for the enumeration of the in/iab itants of Mth 7rrihry
of the United States of America touth oft h: river Ohio.

. T  E it enacted by the Goverior, L.giTfative Council, and fHouf
o . of Reprefentatiser of the Territory of the United Staies o,
America louth of river Obio, That the therifs of the reipediveccounties
of the faid territory fbti be, and hereby are authorifed and required,
to take, or caufe the number of the people within their refpeaive coun-
ties to be taken ; omitting in fuch enumeration Indians not raxed. and
dillinguilhing free male perfons, including thofe bound to fervic2, from
all others; dillinguifhing alfo the fexts ad colors of tree perfons, and,
the free males fixteen years and upwards, from thofe under
that age.   For effeting which  purpofe, the Cheriffs may, and
flill be aided by their deputies; and the Iheriff of eiCh county hall
affign to each deputy employed in aid to hiunfelf in taking thz cnume-
vation, a certain divifion of his county, plainly deferibed in writing.
The theriffs and their deputies (hall reipedively take an oath or afirr.-
4tion, before tome julice of the peace, refident within their refpective
counties, previous to entering on the dilcharge of the duties required
by this ad!t ; the oath or affirmation of the Ghtriff fhal be:  I, A. B.
fheriff of the county of   do folemnly fwear (or aflirm) that I will
well and truly make, or caufe to be made, a juil and perfe& enumeration
ol all the people within the faid county, abd return the fame to the
povernor of the territory aforefaid, agreeable to the diretaions of n a,
entitled, ' An a,1 providing for the enumeration of the inhabitants of the
territory of the United States ot America fouth of the river Ohio' ac.
cording to the bdl of my ability,

county, do fofemnly fliar (or affirm) that I will make a jult enumeratih
on of all the people within the diviflon of the faid county afigncd to
me by the theriff thereof, and make return thereof to the f4id fherif
agrecabia to the direaions of an a& of the gtneral affembly of the ter
ritory afordfaid, entitled, ' An ad providing for the enumeration of th
inhabitants ol the territory of the United Statet of America fouth o
(he river Ohio,' according to the belt of my ability.
