      TRUE GOSPEL PREACHING:

                     WHAT IS IT?*

I HAVE been requested, my friends, by the Secretary of the
Parent Society, to open this meeting with a few remarks upon
the object of our organization. But, as that was stated by the
Secretary so fully at the formation of this Society on Wednes-
day evening, I will merely say, in a word, for the benefit of
those who were not with us then, that the great object of this
organization is TO UNITE ALL CHRISTIANS, ON THE BASIS OF THE
HOLY SCRIPTURES AS DIVINELY INSPIRED, AGAINST SLAVERY, AND TO
CONCENTRATE THE ENERGIES OF THE CHRISTIAN MINISTRY AND
OF CHRISTIAN CHURCHES UPON THE EXTINCTION OF OUR GREAT NA-
TIONAL SIN. Sad is it, indeed, my friends, that there should
be any need of such an organization,-that there should be a
necessity to form an association outside of the Christian Church
to do the work peculiarly appropriate to the Church itself; for
the very existence of an anti-slavery, a peace, or a temperance
society is a standing rebuke against the Church of Christ. If,
at the Reformation, the Christian Church bad incorporated
into its faith, preaching, and practice those principles of the
Christian religion which the friends of Peace, Temperance, and
Freedom have arrayed against every form of oppression and
wrong; if every Christian denomination, Papal and Protestant,
had simply but firmly taken the consistent course that the
Society of Friends has taken against the three great scourges
of the human race, INTEMPERANCE, SLAVERY, and WAR, there
would now be no need of any such organizations as this; for,
as the Rev. Albert Barnes has well said, There is no power
OUT of the Church that could sustain slavery an hour, if it were
