CHAP. 2.-An ACT to further provide for the Public Defence.
Passed October J, 1862.
Ditty of go.   I. Be it enacted by the general assembly, that the governor of this
v,,r.,,r    commonwealth shall, when requested by the president of the Con-
federate States, be and he is hereby authorized and required from
slaves, how  time to time to call into the service of the Confederate States, for
'azlld out  labor on fortifications, and other works necessary for the public de-

the several counties, cities and towns on which the requisition shall

be paid by the Confederate States to the holders of the slaves, and
