2. The said Williams shall have power to transfer to any other How tranferred

provided his said successor shall execute bond in the same manner
as herein before provided.

CHAP. 165.-An ACT providing for the voluntary enslavement of George,
Shed, Sam and Sukey, persons of color in the County of Buckingham.
Passed February 28, 1861.
1. Be it enacted by the general assembly, that it shall be lawful Negroes to
for George, Shed, Sam and Sulcey, negroes who were manumitted by ebooseowner
the last will and testament of Archibald T. Gordon deceased, of the
county of Buckingham, to select a master for themselves, upon the
terms and conditions hereih after mentioned.
2. Should the said negroes select a master for themselves, it shall Petition, bow
be lawful for them to file a petition in the circuit court of Bucking- filed
ham, at any regular term thereof, setting forth their desire to select a
master, and the name of the person so desired to be selected as owner;
which said petition shall be signed by the petil  ners in the presence
of two witnesses.
3. The court in which such petition shall have been filed, upon Summons Issued
the filing of said petition, shall cause to be summoned, to appear be-
fore said court, both the petitioners and the person designated in
said petition.
4. Upon the appearance of the petitioners and the person desig- Exnmination,
nated in the petition, the court shall proceed to examine each partyhow made
separately, as well as such other persons as said court may see fit.
At such examination the attorney for the commonwealth shall be
present, and see that the examination is preolerly conducted, and
that no injustice is done the petitioners.
5. If upon such examination the court shall be satisfied that there Duty and power
is no fraud or collusion between the parties, and that the petitioners, of court
should the prayer of the petition be granted, will be the bona fide
slaves of the person designated in the petition, the said court shall
cause to be entered upon its records that the petitioners by name
have selected as their master the person so designated in said peti-
tion; whereupon the absolute property in said negroes, as slaves,
shall vest, from the time of such entry, in the person so chosen as
master, to all intents and purposes whatsoever : -provided, however, 3!aster to enter
that the person so selected as master shall enter into bond, with Into bond
