his wife, of the county of Nelson, shall be and the same- is hereby
dissolved ; the said Paulina Pendleton forever divorced from her hus-
band the said Shelton, and the power and authority of the said Shel-
ton over the person and property of the children of the said Pau-
lina Pendleton and over the persons and property of the said marri-
age, shall henceforth cease and determine: Provided however, That
nothing herein contained shall be construed to prevent the children
of the said marriage from inheriting and transmitting inheritance in
the same'manner as if this act had never passed.
Commenceent.  2. This act shall be in force from the passing thereof.
CHAr. 286.-An ACT concerning Jane Ilailstock.
(Passed March 16, 1847.]
Preamble.     Whereas it is represented to this general assembly by the petition
of sundry persons, citizens of the county of Stafford, that Jane Hail-
stock, a free woman of colour, was indicted in the circuit superior
court of law and chancery of the said county on the twentieth day
of June last, and found guilty of the crime of arson, but that sen-
tence yet remains to be pronounced upon her; that the circumstan-
ces under which the said offence was committed, make it just that
the punishment of the said Jane Ilailstock for the said offence should
be commuted to confinement in the public jail and penitentiary house:
Punishment of  1. Be it therefore enacted by the general assembly, That it shall
Jane lialistock be the duty of the judge of the circuit superior court of law and
comlted.  chancery for the county of Stafford, with the assent of the said Jane
Hailstock, to sentence her for the offence aforesaid to confinement in
the public jail and penitentiary house for the term of ten years, in-
stead of the punishment now prescribed by law for her said offence,
and she shall be dealt with in the same manner as if the offence of
which she was convicted had been so punishable when the same was
committed.
Commencement.  2. This act shall be in force from the passing thereof.

how James L.  1. Be it enacted by the general assembly, That the county court of
Campbell maybe Aurusta shall have power to permit James L. Campbell, a free person
permitted to re-
reain in state.  of colour, to remain within the commonwealh : Provided, That the
same proceedings in all respects shall be had as are required by law
in the case of applications made by emancipated slaves for permis-
sion to remain in the commonwealth.
commencement.  2. This act shall be in force from the passing thereof.
CHAP. 288.-An ACT permitting Julia Ann Wilson, a woman of colour, to
remain in the commonwcalth.
[Passed March 1, 1817.]
Julia Ann wAi-  1. Be it enacted by the general assembly, That Julia Ann Wilson,
son allowed to
remain In state, a woman of colour, emancipated by Henry Wilson, late of the county
of Halifax, shall be and she is hereby permitted to remain as a free
woman within this commonwealth, and to reside in the said county
of Halifax: Provided, That if the said Julia Ann shall hereafter be
convicted by the verdict of a jury or the judgment of a court of
record of any offence against the laws of this commonwealth, the
privilege hereby granted shall thenceforth cease aid determine.
Commencement.  2. This act shall be in force from the passing thereof.
