CHAP. I.-An ACT imposing taxes for the support of government.
[Passed March 24, 18.0.]
1. Be it enacted by the general assembly, That the public taxes for Taxes for 1842.
the year eighteen hundred and forty-two, shall be as follow : Oil lands, on lands.
(except such as are exempted by law from taxation,) for every hon-
dred dollars value thereof, (agreeably to the assessment of lands made
pursuant to the act providing for the reassessment of lands in this com.
monwealth, passed March the twenty-fourth, eighteen hundred and
thirty-eight, and the act, entitled  an act to amtend the act, entitled
an act providing for the reassessment of lands in this common-
wealth,'  passed March the first, eighteen hundred and thirty-nine,)
twelve and a half cents ; for all hon.-es and lots in any city, borough hlouses and lots
or town, (except such as are exempted by law from taxation,) three in towns.
dollars for every hundred dollars yearly rent or annual value thereof;
for all houses and lots in any city, borough or town, (except such as
are exempted by law fron taxation,) improved and not rented or oc-
cupied, and for all unimproved lots as aforesaid, twelve and a half
cents for every hundred dollars value thereof, agreeably to the above
cited acts, providing for a reassessment of lands in this common-
wealth ; for every slave above the age of twelve years, (except such slaves.
as have been or may be exempted, in consequence of age or infirmity,
by the respective county and corporation courts,) forty cents; for liorses.
every stallion or jackass, twice the price at which such stallion or
jackass covers a mare by the season ; and when the services of such
stallion or jackass are charged for, not in money, but in provisions,
or other commodities of value, then twice the alternative value of
such property in money, such value to be fixed by the commissioner
of the revenue: Provided, That not less than six dollars be paid on
every stallion or jackass let to mares; for all other horses, toares,
asses, mules and colts, twelve and a half cents each ; for every riding Carriages.
or pleasure carriage, stage coach, jersey wagon or carryall and gig,
and harness belonging thereto, one and( a fourth per centum oti the
value thereof, to be ascertained by the commissiorer of the revenue,
in the manner prescribed by law : Provided, That not less than two
dollars shall be paid on each four wheeled riding or pleasure carriage
and harness ; and not less than three dollars oti each stage coach and
harness; and not less than one dollar on each jersey wagon and car-
ryall and harness; and not less than fifty cents oii each two wheel
riding or pleasure carriage and Itarness.
2. There shall be levied, collected and paid, in the manner pre- Lmv proce..
