Be it enacted by the general assembly, That James, a man emnaln in state. of colour, lately emancipated by captain Ralph Quarles, deceased, late of the county of Louisa, shall be, and he is hereby per- initted to remain as a free person within this commonwealth, and to reside in the said county of Louisa: Provided, That if the said James shall hereafter be convicted by the verdict of a jury or the judgment of a court, of iny offence against the laws of this com- inonwealth, tile privilege hereby granted shall cease. Commencement. 2. This act shall be in lbree from its passage. CHAP. 22.1.-An ACT allowing Edward Stokes, a free man of colour, to re- main in the commonwealth for a limited period. Be it enacted by the general assembly, That with the view lowed to remnai in of enabling Edward Stokes, a man of colour, residing in the town stito a limited 0 time. of Petersburg, who has lately been emancipated, to obtain the means of purchasing his wire,, who is a slave, in order to her remo- val with him out of the comnmmwealh, the said Edward Stokes he allowed to reside in the said town of Petersburg, unmolested, until the first day of Oetoler in the year eighteen hundred and thirty- seven, but no longer; and if at any time within that period tile corporation court of the said town of Petersburg shall see cause to order the said Edward Stokes to depart the commonweahlth, they shall have full power so to order, and thenceforth the leave of resi- dence hereby granted shall cease. ,Commencement. 2. This act shall be in force from its passage. CirAe. 2 5.-An ACT concerning Sally Dabney. (Passed March 11, 1835.) .renmbIe. Whereas, it is represented to the general assembly that Sally Dabney, a woman of colour, residing in the city of Richmond, was a slave the property of her husband Cambridge Dabney, who, by his last will, dated the seventh of December, eighteen hundred and twenty-six, recognized her right to freedom by making several be- quests to lier, and by injoininig on her tile payment of his debts, and a small annuity to his mother, and that the said Cambridge Dabney left no heirs or next of kin, capable in law of taking so much of his estate as is undisposed of by said will, so that tile same will pass to the commonweahlt for the benefit of tile literary fuld ; and whereas, doubts exist whether the said Sally Dabney is (July emancipated by the said will, and it is represented that if she l)e not, she also passes to the commonwealth for the benefit of the literary funr, and the snid Sally Dabney hath petitioned the general assembly for relief in this behalf: Therefore, Cnmmnnwenlth', 1.
