CthAl,. 271.-An ACT allowing Dolly Woodson, a free woman of colour, to
remainin this commonwealth.
(Pased Mach 8, 1831.)
Whereas it appears to the general assembly that Dolly Woodson, Pra,,,I,i.
a woman of colour, of the city of R.ichmond, was emancipated by
the will of Ann Prichard, late of ti shid city, and provision made
for her support during life; that tli said, Dolly has ever borne an
excellent character, is without children, and is now infirm in health
and advanced in age, being upwards of lifty years old ; and she hav-
ing petitioned the legislature to be allowed the privilege of remain-
ing in this commonwealth:
1. Be it enacted, That the said )olly Woodson shall be, and she pnn wodeon   t.
is hereby permitted to remain as a free person within this common-,ta   i
wealth, and to reside in the said city of Richmomd : Provided,
'rThat if the said Dully Woodson shall hereafter be convicted by the
verdict of a jury, or the judgment of a court, of any oflnce against
the laws of this commonwealth, the privilege hereby granted shall
cease.
2. This act shall be in force from the passing thereof.  Commencement.
CHAP. 272.-An ACT allowing William Caswell, a free man of colour, to re-
main in this commonwealth.
(Paled March S, 1831.)
Whereas it appears to the general assembly that William Caswell, tPcamtlde.
a free man of colour, now residing in the city of Richmond, was
emancipated by the will of the late Rev'd John Buchanan, of said
city; that he is a man of exemplary character and deportment,
and is now of infirm health, advanced in life, and has a wife and
several children, all of whom are entitled to a residence in this
commonwealth, having been born free therein; and that having pre-
sented his application to the court of hustings for the said city, un-
der the act of assembly, for leave to reside therein, there being eight
members on the bench, the same was overruled by the single vote
of the presiding magistrate, and that magistrate not opposed to the
petitioner's obtaining the privilege sought, but feeling himself con-
strained by the letter of the existing law to reject the application.
And the said William Caswell having now petitioned the legislature
to grant him the privilege which lie thus failed to obtain at the hands
of the court:
1. Be it enacted, That the said William Caswell shall be, and he wam in, ca,,ot
is hereby permitted to remain as a free person within this comnion- i.wtto.

That if the said William Caswell shall hereafter be convicted by
the verdict of a jury, or the judgment of a court, of any offence
against the laws of this commonwealth, the privilege hereby granted
shall cease.
