CHiAPTER 137.-An not appointing trustees for the town of Stanardaville, In the
county  Orange, and for other purposes.
(Passed February 5th, 1859.)
Town orStanards  1. lie it enacted by the General ssembly, That the town of
ville incorporated. Stanardsville, in the county of Orange, as the same has been here-
tolore laid ofrinto lots, streets and alleys, or as the same may be
hereafter further laid off and extended into lots, streets and alleys,
shall be, and the same is hereby made a town corporate, to be
Trustees how and known and distinguished by the name of Stanardsville ; and
when elected.  for the better governing and well-ordering the aflhirs of said town,
it shll be lawli for the white male freeholders and house.keepers
thereof, to meet at some convenient place in the said town, on the
first Monday in June next, and on the same lay in each and every
year thereafter, then to elect by ballot seven suitable persons,
being freeholders and inhabitants of said town, to serve as trus-
tees of the. same.
Trustees to take  2. lie it finther enacted, That the persons elected shall an.
oath of office.  nually, before they enter upon the duties of their respective offices,
take an oath, or make solemn affirmation before some justice of
the peace of the county of Orange, well and truly, faithfully and
impartially to do, execute and perform the duties of their several

makeby-laws and shall have power to make such by-laws and ordinances for regu-

Proviso.     force, alter or repeal: Provided however, That such by-laws and
ordinances shall not be repugnant to, or inconsistent with, the
constitution and laws of the United States, or of this Common.
Power to lay  wealth: And to enable the said trustees to carry into effect the
taxes,       said powers, they are hereby authorised annualy to levy a tax on
the houses, lots, slaves and horses, within the limits of said town,
provided the said tax shall not exceed, in any one year, two dol-
