[Passed March 9th, 1819.]
Whereas it has been represented to the present General As- Pnea,,i,,..
sembly, that a certain slave, named John, the property of John
Thornton of the county of Caroline, was legally tried and con-
victed of murder, by the justices of the peace, for the county
aforesaid, in the year eighteen hundred aid eighteen, and was
upon conviction, sentenced to be hanged, bein  p praised, by the
justices aforesaid, to tile sum of eiht hundred dollars, as an
equivalent to the said Thornton, for the loss thereby sustained;
that the justices aforesaid, the members of the bar, and mani
other respectable persons of the county aforesitid, for divers ,ood
causes and considerations them  thereunto moving, did petition
the Fxecutive of this Commonwealth, either to transport or par-,
don the slave aforesaid ; that pardon was granted after tihe p'i-
s ler hal escaped fromn jail, and before the second day of execo-
tion hall arr~ved • and the said convict h..s never been seen or
mleard 1f since; by reason whereof, the said Tlhornton has not
neeri indemnified tor the loss thereby sustained
