An. Act authorising the .Emanc'paion of George Simmons, a llan

W     HEREAS it appears that George Simmons, a man of co. Preamble.
louri who is now held iiq bondage by Travers l)antil, es-
quire!, of Stafford county, was purchased by him at the particu-
lar request ot the said Gtorge's reputed father, (who was a white
man and a citizen of this commonwealth) with an intention of
emancipating the said George, as soon as the said Daniel sh iuld
have been reimbursed the amount of the purchase Mioney paid
for the said George, and that the said Daniel hath acknowledged
himself to have been so reimbursed, and signified hi3 wish that
the said George should be emancipated, with the privilege of re-
hnaining within this state:
1. Be it therefore enacted, by the General Assembly, That in Geo. Simmons
case the said George Simmons should he emancipated by the said to he per,,ltted
baniel, lie, the said George, shall be and is hereby permitted to to remain iii this
remain, as a free man, within this state, and to have and enjoy state.
all the rights and privileges which other free peopele of colour
residing within this commonwenlth possess and enjoy.
2. This act shall be in force from the passing thereof.  Commernemoat.
CHAP. LXXIV.
An Act aulhqrising oohn Mitchell to introduce and hold -vithin this
c'ommonwealth certain Siaves thrrein mentioned.

W       HEREAS it is represented to the present General Assem- Preambles
bly, That J ;hn Mitchell, -late a freeholder and resident
on the bank of the North Branch of Potomack river, nearly op-
posite Old Town, in the state of Mlairylanel, was compelled by the
misfortune of having his house in which he resided consumed by
fire, to move across tie river to the said town in the state of Ma.
ryland, carrying with him two female slaves, namely, Jenny and
P6ily: And whereas, the said John Mitchell isnow d~sirous to
return and reside on his said land in the county of Hhimpshire,1i4
the state of Virginia, and to brin with him the aforesaid ulavc:
