An act for the regulation of Ithe patrol.
Be it enacted by the General .1issenbly of ithe Statel f North
Carolina, and it is hereby enacted by Me authority of the same, countycomes
That from and ofter the passage of this act, it shall be the duty of 111l uippoint
the County Court of each county in this State, should the court patrol cont.
deen it necessary, at the first court that shall happen after the first inateet. .
day of January in each and every year, or any subsequent court,
to appoint a patrol committee, of tifree persons in each captain's
district in said county, whose duty it shall be to employ a patrol,
of such number of persons as they may think necessary, to patrol
their district.
11. .nd be it farther enacted, That it shall be the duty ofthe said County Courm
County Courts, at the same term, to lay a tax ofot more than ten to lny a tax to

III. Ind be it further einacted, That it shall be the duty of the
patrol to visit the negro houses in their respective distric's as of Duties of pat-

tation without a proper permit or pas;. It shall also be the duty
of the patrollers to visit all suspected places, and suppress all
collections of slaves; it shall also be their duty to be diligent
in apprehending all runaway negroes in their resoective dis-
tricts; to be vigilant and endrelivor to detect all thefts, ard bring
the p1wrpetrators to justice, and also all persons guilty of trading
with slaves.  The patrol committee shall hear all complaini' )utiesor pat-
lodged against the patrollers For abuse or neglect of duty, and rol conunineeu
shall have full power antd authority to discharge any one or more
of the patrollers, and employ others, at any time when theiy may
think it expedient.  The patrols thus emplouye  shall have as
full powe'tri as those heretolore appointed by the County Courts;
and if, upon taking up a negro anti chastising him as now direct- Powersofpnt-
ed by law, he shall behave insolently, they may inllict further rol.

IV. He it further enacted, That nothing herein contained shall
be construed to prevent [he County Courts from appointing such
patrols as they may deen proper.
