Be it enacted by the General qssemb/y of the State of Nort' Carolina, and it is hereby enacted by the authority of the san'e, Persons desir- That hereafter anly inhabitant of this State, de irous to emanci. iqi to eiftlli pae tneir pate a slave or slaves, shall file a petition in writing in some cne laves, shall of the Superior Courts of this State, setting forth, as near as filea petition may be, the name, sex and ge of each slave intended to be a' ill tile superior t coun nancipantd, amd praying permission to emancipate the same; anti the enurt before whom such petition shall be filed, shall grant the prayer thereof on the following conditions, and not otherwise, conditions on viz. That the petitioner shall shew that he has given public no- which court tire of his intention to file such petition at the court house of the prayer thetcounty and in the State Gazette for at least six weeks before the hearing of such petition; and that the petitioner hall enter into bond, with two securities. each to be good anti suflicient, paya- ble to the Guvernor of the State and his successors in office, in the sum of ote thousand dollars for each slave named in the pe. tition, conditioned that the said slave orslaves shall honestly and correctly demean him, her or themselves, while he, she or they shall remain within the State of North Carolina; anti that lie, she or they will, within ninety days after granting the prayer of the petitioner to emancipate him. her or them, leave the State of North Carolina, and never afterwards come within the same: Proviso. Provided, nevertheless, that no such emancipation shall in any manner whatever invalidate or affect the rights or claims of any creditor of such petitioner.
