Br it enacted by Ith General .3smembly of the State of North Carolina, and
it is hereby enacted bu the authority 'oj the same. Thai fii'* anti after the
p;, ...ge of this act, i sha1ll out fie Iawfui lor lhe comnnissioners of the (own of
Wa:mingion to grant badges to any slaves except such as may in their opinion
be necessarv to iarry on the ordinary husiness of the town and foir the ipure
pes of commerce, unr in.any case except upon the written request of the
owner or manager of suid slave.
11 He it further enacted. That no mechanic, who is a slave, anti to whom
a budge may be granted by said commissioners, shall be pernitled to make any
contract for the execution of any work within his trade beyond the value of
ole day's woo k; but all such contracts shall be enterl Into by the iasters or
in nagers, or their agents; and no recovery shall hereafter be had in lan for
any hervices rendeei id or woolk d'ane by any meclhanic, who is a slave, upon
aiv rontract or agreement made with any peison by said slave, except as above
speci fil. >
Ill. lBe itfurther enacted, That it sh'all not hereafter be lawful for said
commijssI'es t' grant badges or heenes to huxles toany female slaveunder
the age of forty yeas; and in case any female slave, under the age of forty
vers, to whom a ble' shall have hern granted by said comniissioners, shall
be guilty of pursuing :h' occupaion of huxter, said slave shall be taken up
by the constable of the town, and upon indictment in the Court of Pleas and
Quarter Sevsiotns of New Hanover enunty, and convicted thereof, shall be
hired out for. the term of onte Year, except where such slave shall have been
hired out by the owner toume . otler person for one year or% more; in which
case said slave shall he hired ut for the bailance of the time for which she
may have been hired out by her owner; one half of said hire to be applied to
