Enacted by a General Assembly, begun and held at Raleigh, on
the eighteenth day of .November, in the year of our Lord one
thousand eight hundred and twenty-two, and in the forly-
sixth year of the independence of the said state.

CHAPTER I.
An act to provide a revenue for the payment of the civil list and contingeut
charges of government..' -
Be it enacted by the General .4ssembly of the state of North-Ca-
rolina, and it is hereby enacted by the authority of the saie, That 6 cents to be
there shall be annually levied and collected from all the real pro. levied on eve.
perty, with the improvements thereon, within this state, subject to y1  dollars
taxation, the sum of six cents on every hundred dollars value    '
thereof.
II. Be it further enacted, That eali and every person, who
shall peddle in any county in this state, and not on a navigable
stream, goods, wares or Inerchandize, not of the growth or manu- Pedlars to
facture of this state, or any wooden clock, or the machinery or ma- PUY 5o ta.%
terials thereof, which shall not be of the manufacture of this state,
or jewelry, which machinery or clock shall be manufactured of
materials not of the growth, produce, or manufacture of this state,
shall pay the sherilf of each and every county in which he, she or
they shall so pedle goods, wares or merchandize or jewelry, the
suim of twenty  ollars on every cart, wagon, or other vehicle, em-
ployed in the transportation of said goo.s, wares or Ierchandize
Provided, that no license to peddle shall autliorise such pedlar to Prodiso,
seH oods at auction: Provided, that, should two or inore persons
eipoy one cart, waggon, or other vehicle, to transport their
goods, wares or inerchandize, each and every of then shall pay
the aforesaid tax on said cart, waggon, or otier vehicle, by them
eiployed: nor shall any thing in this act be construed to autho-
rise two or miore persons, under the pretence of being partners in
trade, to peddle goods, wares or inerchandize under the same li-
cense; which tax shall be accounted for by the sheritr in like man-
ner as other taxes. And, upon paying such tax, and obiaining a
receipt therefor, such person shall be ambe(Hlirised and peru itted to
hawk and peddle goods, wares and merchanidise, woodenm clocks,
or the machinery or anlterials, which shall not be of the manufac-
ture of this state, or jewelry as aforemaid, in such county, and no
other, for the term of one year ,hereafter. And every person who
shall peddle goods, wares or inerchandize, not of the growth or
imanufhcture of this state, except vegetables or other provasions, of
the produce of the United States, on any navigable waters in this
