along the left bank of the Mississippi: river, from
the Narrows to Ellis' Cliffs, so as to protect their
lands, and the lands of other persois, from over-
flow.  And to acconipliSh this end, said board
may receive and appropriato subscriptions; and
also may appropriate any money arising front the
sale of any of their said lands, or they may ap-
propiliate the lands in kind.

CHAPTER CLI.
AN ACT to increase the pay of Jurors.
SECTION 1. Be it enacte(l by the Legislature
of the State of Mississpi, That hereafter the per
dicim pay of Pettit and Grand Jurors summinoned
for the term to the circuit courts in this State shall
be two dollars instead of one dollar and fifty cents
as is now provided by law.
Sic. 2. Be it further enacted, That so much of
article first, chapter eight, of the lovised Code as
comes in conflict with this act be, and the sanie is
hereby repealed, and that this act take effect and
be in force fron and aflter its passage.

CHAPTER CLII.
AN ACT to extend to Slavog the privilege of bail and
habeas corpus.
SEcTIoN 1. Be it enacted by the Legislature of.
the Slate of Mississippi, as folows, to-wit : Slaves
charged with any capital offence shall be entitled
to give bail unless the proof of guilt shall be evi-
dent or the presumption great ; Prov'ided,*the mas-
ter, owner or person entitled to the possession of
such Slaves will become bound, with stiflcicint sure-
ties, for their appearance to answer the charge.
