CHAPTER 124.
AN  ACT to be entitled an act to amend an act to reduce into one the aets In.
corporating the town of Houston, and the areral acts amendatory theruto.
SEcTION 1. Be it enacted by the .Legislature of the
State of .iXsissippi, That that portion of land
embraced within one mile square, having the court-
house in the town of Houston, Chickasaw county,
in its centre, shall hereafter be designated and
known by the name of the town of Houston; that
the inhabitants, as above defined, and their succes-
sors forever, are hereby constituted a body corpor-
ate and politic, in fact and law, by the name and
style of the town of Houston; and by that name
shall have perpetual succession; shall sue and be
sued, implead and be impleaded, defend and be de-
fended, in all courts of law and equity, and in all
actions whatsoever; may purchase, receive and hold
property, real estate and personal, within said town;
and may purchase, receive and hold property, real
and personal, beyond the limits of the town to be
used for the burial of the dead of said town; and
may sell, lease or dispose of such property for the
benefit of the town; and may have a common seal,
and break, change, or alter and make a new seal
at pleasure.
SEC. 2. Be it urther enacted, That the inunici-
pal government of said town shall be vested in a
mayor and five selectmen, an assessor and collector
of taxes, a clerk, a treasurer and a constable. The
mayor, selectmen and constable shall be biennially
elected by the qualified electors of the town of
Houston. The assessor and collector, clerk and
treasurer, and such other subordinate officers as are
in this act provided for, or may be established by
said mayor and selectmen, to be appointed or elect-
ed, as they shall, by ordinance, direct.
All free white male inhabitants of said town,
twenty-one or more years of age, and citizens of the
United States, who shall have resided in the State
