AN ACT to empower the Board of Police of Pike conuty to remove the Lundy free Negroes living in said county, to Liberia, SECTION 1. Be it enacted by the Legislature of the State of Mississippi, That the Board of Police of Pike county be and are hereby empowered to direct and require the sheriff of said county to hire out, annually, at public auction, after giving thirty days' notice, posted at ten or more public places in said county, all those free negroes living and residing in the above named county at the time of the passing of this act, known and designated by the surname Lundy, who are not already bound to servitude for a limited number of years, taking note, with good sufficient security, made payable to the President of the Board of Police, and his successors in office, specifying in the face of each note the consideration for which each is given, until the amount arising from such source, and interest upon the same, shall create a fund of six thousand dollars. SEC. 2. Be it further enacted, That the sheriff shall deliver over to the county Treasurer all notes taken by him in pursuance of the first section of this act, who shall be ex-officio Treasurer of said fund; who shall collect and loan out the same at eight per cent. per annum, until the said sum shall amount to the the sum of six thousand dollars, as provided in the above section. SEC. 3. Be it further enacted, That when said hire shall amount to the sum of six thousand dollars, said Board of Police shall have the right, and is hereby authorized and required to make a contract with any individual or individuals, or any company or corpo- ration who may undertake the same, to transport said free negroes to Liberia; and said contractor or contractors shall, before they enter upon the dis- charge of the duties required by this act, enter into bond, with good and sufficient security, to be made payable to, and approved by, the President of said Board of Police, on condition that said con- tractor or contractors will deliver said free negroes in Liberia, and will,provide for said negroes com- fortable lodging and:provisions for one year, which bond may be put in suit for any breach thereof, in any 859
