CHAPTER 26.
AN ACT supplemental to an act to secure to owners of slaves exe-
cuted by sentence of law compensation for the same, passed Feb-
ruary 18th, 1846,
SECTION 1. Be it enacted by the Legislature of
the State of Mississippi, That hereafter any owner or
owners of a slave guilty of any crime punishable by
the laws of this State, with death, who shall direct-
ly or indirectly, carry off, conceal or otherwise dis-
pose of such slave with the view to prevent the
trial and conviction of such slave for the same, shall
not be entitled to the benefit of the act of which this
is a supplement.
SEC. 2. Be it further enacted, That if the jury
trying such slave for such capital offence, shall find
him or her guilty of the same, and they believe from
the testimony that the owner or owners of such slave
have attempted to screen the same from trial in the
manner contemplated by the first section of this sup-
plementary act, it shall be, and is hereby made their
duty to find that fact also, which finding shall be
entered on the record, and certified to the Auditor,
which shall be his authority for drawing his war-
rant.
SEC. 3. Be itfurthr enacted, That it shall not
be necessary to alledge in the indictment the name
of the owner of such slave or slaves,.
SEC. 4. And be it further enacted, That this act
shall take effect and bein force from and after its
passage.

CHAPTER 27.
Ai ACT to amend the law in relation to writs of error and super-
cedeas in criminal cases.
SECTION 1. Be it enacted by the Legislature oJ
the State of Mississippi, That hereafter the Judges
of the Circuit Courts may grant writs of error and
supercedeas in cases of felony; and in all such cases
where the party applying for the same, shall be in;
custody,such writs shall be granted without bond
and security for costs; Provided, the accused shall
accompany his application with an affidavit of his or
her inability to give such bond.
SEC. 2. And be it further enacted, That thisfact'
shall be in force from and, after its passage.
