CHAPTER 44.
AN ACT to prescribe the duties of jailors in relation to runaway
slaves, and to fix the penalty for violating the sane.
SECTION 1. Be it enactediy the Legislature of the Jailor to
State of Mississippi, That it shall be the duty ofkles
the jailors ofthe several counties of this State when-
ever any runaway slave is committed to the jail in
their keeping, to keep said slave constantly confined
and closely shut up, until proven away by the own-
er, or dealt with according to law.
SEC. 2. Be it further enacted, That any jailor vi- Runaways

recovered, one half for the use of the informant,
and the other hall for the common school fund: Pro-
vided, that nothing in this act shall be so construed
