is returned, the sheriff having reasonable notice of
taking such exception, shall in either case be deemed
and stand as special bail, and judgment may beren-
dered ,gainst such sheriff, as in other cases'against
special bail.

CHAPTER 31.
AN ACT to secure -to the owners of slaves executed by sentenlce of
law, compensation for the same.
SEC 1or 1. Be it enacted by the Legislature of te
State of Mississippi, That one half of the value of
any slave or slaves hereafter condemned to die, by
the senience of any court. of competent jurisdiction
within.this State. and -Mho shall spffer death accor-
dingly, shall be paid to the o'wner out of tho&State
. Treasui'y.
SEc. 2. Be it farther enacted, That before any Slerifir t,

dict of a jury,.such judge shallcause the sherif of
the county in which such slave was fouid guilty, to
summons live slave-holders to appearin.court at the.
time specified in said hummons, which-said shive-
holders, 6r any three of them, shall then and there
find the. value of such slave, so condemned and to
 be sentenced, and shall certify the same under their
hands and seals to said court.
