CHAPTER 166.
AN ACT declaringcertain slaves to be free persons of color.
SECTION 1. Be it enacted by the Legislature of the -
State of .1Mississippi, That the following named
slaves of Charles Cawthorn, of Carroll county, ih this
State, viz: a mulatto wdman, named Harriett, Ma-
linda, and her two children, named JosiAh, aged four
years, and Jeremiah, aged about eighteen months, be,
and they are hereby declared to be, free persons of
color in this State, according to the laws concerning
free negroes and mulattos.
SEc. 2. And be it further enacted, That nothing
in this act shall be construed to exempt said negroes
from any lien now existing against them as the
property of said Cawthorn; and this act shall take
effect and be in force from and after its passage.
