Hunt, John McDonald and W. W. McAnnaly
be, and they are hereby, appointed Managers,
whose duty it shall be to hold an election in
the town of Salem, after giving at least ten eld to
days public notice at three of the most public
places in said District, for the purpose of elec-
ting two justices of the peace and one consta-
ble, who shall be commissioned by the Gover-
nor and continue in office until the next gene-
ral election, and until their successors shall
have been qualified.
SEc. 3. dnd be it-further enacted, That this
act shall be in force and take effect from and
after its passage.

CHAPTER 70.
AN ACT concerning Free Negroes and Mulattoes.
SECTION 1. Be it enacted by the Legislature
of the State of Mississippi, That it shall and
may be lawful for any free negro or mulatto ,ree So-
l groes and
under the age of fifty years and over the age 1ualnoes
of sixteen years, now residing in the countiesor cticock
of Jackson or Hancock, within six months counties.
after the passage of this act to apply to the
Probate Court of said Counties, respectively,
for permission to remain and reside within
this State; and upon such application, if the
person applying shall comply with the provi-
sions of the first section of an act entitled an
act to amend an act entitled an act to reduce
into one the several acts concerning slaves,
free negroes, and mulattoes, passed June 18th,
