CHAPTER 38.
AN ACT to authorize the Governor of this State to com-
mute the punishment of death in certain cases.
SECTION 1. Be it enacted, by the Legislature For negr

hereafter be convicted of negro stealing, to the
governor of the state of Mississippi, it shall be
his duty by proclamation to commute the pun-
ishment of death to hard labor in the peniten-
tiary of this state for a period not less than ten
nor more than twenty years.
