AN ACT to emancipate and set free, two slaves belonging to the ps.
tate of the late David Ilulmes, de'd, former Governor of this State,
Whereas, the late David Holmes, deceased, for-
MerGoverr of this State, did, by his last will
and tpstamnent, emancipate and set free two slaves,
I4ewis and Nancy, and hatlh through his executor
prayed the legislature that the said slaves may be
perlitted to remain as free persons of color in this
Stato; and whereas, the legislature and the people
of the State entertain the most lively regard for the
memory of the deceased, for his many private vir-
tues and eminent public services vN hile living; and
whereas, it appears to the satisfaction of this legis-
!atore, that the said negroes sustain a good char-
aeter, therefore
Be it enacted by the L'gislature of the State of
J1ississippi, That negrue  man Lewis, and his
wife nimed Nncy, two slaves belonging to the
estate of the late David Holmes, deceased, former
Governor of this State, be, and they are hereby
emn cipated and set free. and that they be, and are
hereby permitted to remain in part of this State as
free persons of color: Prpivided, that the rights of
creditor's shall noCbe in ari wise affected thereby,
atid provided also., that the said Lewis and Nan-
cy. shall give bond and *approved security to tho
po4ze court of any county in this State in which
