TOWNS AND CITIES: CLARKSVILLE.
AN ACT to amend an act entitled Ian act to incorporate the town of Clarksville?' ap-
proved February 21th, 1853.

Be it enacted by the General Assembly of the State of Missouri, as
follows :
§ 1. That sections 12 and 15 are hereby repealed and the following
inserted, which shall stand as sections 12 and 15: Section 12. The Coun-
cil shall have power by ordinance to levy and collect a poll tax, not to
exceed one dollar in any one year, on all male inhabitants of the city over
the age of twenty-one years, to levy and collect taxes on all real and per-
sonal property within the city not to exceed one per cent. upon the
assessed value thereof. Section 15. The Council shall have power to ap-
point one overseer of the streets, and to cause all able bodied male in-
habitants of said city, between the age of eighteen and forty-five, to work
on the streets any number of days not exceeding four in each year, and
shall be exempt from working roads outside of the city.        But the City
Council shall have power to become stockholders in, loan the credit of the
city to, or appropriate money for the use of, companies organized for im-
provement of roads leading to the city or to the ferry landing opposite
the city in the State of Illinois, after first having obtained the consent of
the inhabitants, as required by the Constitution of the State.
§ 2. This act to be in force from and after its passage.
