lished in different portions of the State, and in all other respects herein shall
conform to the existing statutes.
§ 3. That every Sheriff who shall have hitherto sold, or may hereafter sell,
any runaway slave in his custody, under this or any other act concerning
runaway slaves, after retaining and paying all legal and necessary expenses
out of the proceeds thereof, shall pay the residue thereof into the State
Treasury, at the time of settling with the Auditor and Treasurer for the.
revenue of his county for the current year : Provided, The owner or claim-
ant of said runaway slave shall not, prior thereto, have reclaimed the said
residue or balance of the sale, as provided in the sixth section of the above-
recited act.
§ 4. All acts and parts of acts inconsistent with this act are hereby
repealed.
This act to take effect from its passage.

AN ACT amendatory of an act entitled an act concerning Patrols,') approved December
4, 1855.
Be it enacted by the General qssembly of the State of Missouri, as
follows:
§ 1. The fifth section of an act entitled  an act concerning patrols,
shall be amended as follows :
§ 2. Any slave found at such assembly, or who shall be found strolling
about from one plantation to another, without a pass from his master or
mistress, or overseer, said pass specifying the length of time said slave shall
be absent, and the point from and to which said slave shall be permitted to
pass and repass, shall receive any number of lashes at the discretion of the
patrol, not exceeding ten; or if taken before a Justice of the Peace, such
slave shall receive any number of lashes, at the discretion of the Justice,
not to exceed twenty.
This act to take effect and be in force from and after its passage.
