AN ACT supplecental and amendatory to an act, entitled An act to establish
judicial districts and circuits, and to prescribe the times and places of holding
courts, approved, Jan. 21st, 1837.
Criminal courts in St. Louis, when held.
Be it enactcd by the General ./1ssembly of 1w State of Missoitri, as follows:
§ 1.  That so much of the act, to which this is supplemental and amonda-
tory, as prescribes the time of holding coun ts for the transaction of criminal
business in St. Louis county, be,and the same is herchy repealhd; and the said
courts shall be held on the third Monlays of January, May, and September.
This act to take effect and be in force fromn and after its passage.

Slaves, how punished.                2
Be it enacted by the Gcneral Issembly of the State of Jllissouri, as follows:
§ 1.  That the thirty-first, thirty-second, thirty-third, and tLirty-fourth sec-
tions of the ninth Article of an act concerning crines and punishments, ap-
proved, March 20th, 1825, he, and the same is hereby repealed.
§ 2.  When any slave shall hereafter he convicted of a felony, the court
before whom such conviction is had, shall sentence tihe offender to receive on
his bare back any nunber of lashes, not exceeding thirty-nine.
§ :3.  Any slave, ont conviction of a felony, if it be of such a nature, in the
opinion of the court, that it is not safe that such slave should stay in the State,
the court shall compel the master or owner of such slave, to pay all costs
which may accrue in the trial of said slave, and the owner shall enter into
bond to the State in the stum of five hundred dollars, with one or more securi-\
ties, to be approved by the court, condi ioned that such slave le taken or sent
out of the State within sixty days, and shall not return to the State for twen-
ty years thereafter, without lawhul permission.
This act to take effect and be in force front anti after its passage.
