No. 41.]                 AN ACT
To provide for the support of tho families of officers, soldiers and
marines, non-commissioned officers in the military and naval
service of the Confederate States and of this State, being citi-
zens or residents of the State of Louisiana.
See. 1. Be it enacted by the Senate and House of Representa-
tives of the State of Louisiana, in General Assembly convened;
That the families of all the officers, non-commissioned officers and
privates in the land service and the marines in the naval service of
the Confederdte States or of this State, who have or may hereafter
enter said service as Volunteers, Conscripts or Militia-men, and
who at the time of entering said service, were citizens and resi-
dents of the State of Louisiana, who are in necessitous circun-
stances, or may hereafter become so, shall be entitled to demand and
receive from the Treasury of the State the following sums, viz.:
For the wife, ten dollars per month, and each child. under twelve
years of age, five dollars and the like sum of ten dollars per mionth
for the father and mother, and five dollars per month for each
brother and sister under the age of twelve years, who are members
of his family, dependent on such officer, soldier or marine, for a
support aid unable to support himself or herself.
Sec. 2. Be it further enacted, &c., That the Police Jury of each
parish shall immediately after the passage of this Act, ascertain
the number of officers, soldiers, non-commissioned officers and ma-
rines that have entered or may hereafter enter the military or iia-
val service as aforesaid from such parish, whose families are in ne-
cessitous circumstances, together with their names, ages and sexes
and the relation they bear to said soldier, officer, non-collis-
sioned officer or marine as aforesaid, as contemplated by the fore-
going Section, and from time to time transmit lists thereof to the
Auditor of Public Accounts: Provided, that persons entitled to the
benefit of this Act, residing in parishes occupied oi- held by the
forces of the enemy, shall have the right to draw the amount they
may be entitled to receive, on the warrant of the President of the
Police Jury in an adjoining parish: Provided further, that the
Parochial authorities within which such persons reside, cannot act
in consequence of the presence of the enemy, and that the families
of the officers, soldiers, non-commissioned officers and marines
aforesaid, who by reason of having been detained within the ene-
my's lines, or who have been unable to escape therefrom, and shall
not be able to report at once to the authorities of a neighboring
parish, shall also be entitled to receive the same they would have
been entitled to, had they been outside of the enemy's lines from
the date of the passage of this Act, as soon as they are able to
report.
Sec. 3. Be it further enacted, &c., That after said list or lists are
made out, they shall be carefully copied and recorded by the clerk
of the Police Jury in each parish, in a well bound book, to be kept
by him for that purpose; and the Presidents of the Police Juries
