No. 140.                  AN ACT
To incorporate the town of Alexandria.
See. 1. Be it enacted by the Senate and House of Representa-
rncorporation or tives of the State of Louisiana, in General Assembly convened, That
of Alex- from and after the passage of this act, all that portion of territory ly-
ing on Red River, in the parish of Rapides, heretofore known as the
town of Alexandria, a plit of which is on file in the oflice of the re-
corder of the parish of Rapides, and also that portion of land ad-
joining the same on the upper side, heretofore designated as the town
of the upper suburb, a plat of which is also on file in the said recor-
der's oflice, shall form a corporation and body politic, by the name of
Vow~ers granfd the town of Alexandria, and as such, shall have perpetual succession,
lp oPal corwmra, and all the free white inhabitants thereof shall forn a body corpo-
rate under the name and style of the mayor and council of the town
of Alexandria, and by that name they and their successors shall be
known in law, and be capable to sue and be sued, plead and be im-
pleaded, defend and be defended, in all courts and places whatsoever,
and in all manner of actions and causes whatsoevor; also to hold, put-
chase, receive, possess, enjoy and retain to them and their successors
all and every kind of property whatever; Provided the same be for
municipal purposes, and the same sell, transfer, alien and lease, form
and dispose of; and may have and use a common seal, and may alter
and change the same at pleasure.
See. 2. Be itfurther enacted, &c., That on the first Monday
Election of mayor of January, in each year, there shall be elected by the qualified voters

Sec. 3. Bc it further enacted, &c., That the election of officers,
