Be it resolved, by the Senate and House of Representatives of the State
of Louisiana, in General Assembly convened: That the General Assein,
bly of Louisiana have witnessed, with admiration and delight, the noble
Conplimental efforts of Pope Pius IX to reform ancient abuses and to promote the hap-
Adfreasto Pope piness of his people; that his conduct has endeared hima to every lover
of constitutional freedom; that we hail him as the instrument destined by
Divine Brovidence to accomplish the political regeneration of Italy; that
the people of Louisiana most ardently cherish the hope that his heroic
exertions in the great cause of liberal principles may surmount every
obstacle, triumph over every opposition, and defeat the machinations of
despotism, until they find a concerted, a universal, and an enthusiastic
response, from the emancipated millions of renovated Italy.
Be it further resolved, etc.: That the Governor of this State be requested
to transmit a copy of the above resolutions to Pope Pius IX.
