To reincorporate the City of Lafayette.
Powers of corpo- SECTION 1. Be it enacted by the Senate and House of Represedtatives
ration.    of the State of Louisiana in General Assembly convened, That'the fau.
bourgs Nuns, Lafayette, Livaudais and Dolassizo,,in the parish offJeffer-
son, shall continue to be a corporation and a bod  politic, by the .name
of the City of Lafayette, and as such, shall have perpetual succession;
and that all the free white inhabitants thereof shall form a body corporate,
by the name of the Mayor, Aldermen and Inhabitants of the city of La.
fayette; rid by that name they and their successors shall be known in law,
and be capable to sue and be sued, plead and be impleaded, answer and
be answered, defend and be defended in any court whatever; also, to hold,
purchase, receive, possess, enjoy and retain to them and to their succes-
sors, all and every kind and quality of property whatsoever, provided the
same be for municipal purposes, and the same to alien, transfer, lease,
firm and dispose of; and may have a common seal, and may alter and
change the same at pleasure.
Officers to be  SEC. 2. Be it further enacted, -c.; That there shall be the following
elected.   officers elected for the said city, that is to say: one Mayor, ten Aldermen,
one Treasurer, one Comptroller or Secretary, one Surveyor, one Public
Printer, one Attorney, one Collector of taxes, one Harbor Master, one
Captain of the night. watch, one Commissary of qtr-ts, and one Com-
missary of day police, and the City Council of said city shall appoint as
many other subordinate officers, not herein mentioned, for preserving the
peace and well ordering the affairs of said city, as said Council may deem
necessary.
Day of election. SEC. 3. Bc it further enacted, 4-c.; That on the first Monday of May
next, and on the first Monday of May annually thereafter, the qualified
voters of each ward in said city shall elect, by ballot, two of their own citi.
zens as Aldermen, to serve for one year, and shall also, at the same time
and place, and in the same manner, elect such other officers of said corpo.
ration, whose election is provided for by this act, and whose term of ser.
Salaries.  vice expires antifally; the salaries of which several officers shall be esta.
blished by the said City Council on votes by yeas and nays, recorded upon
the journal of said Council, and until so established, shall remain as now
fixed by law.
Council.     SEC. 4. Be it further enacted1, Jc.; That the Aldermen chosen shall
form a council to be called the City Council of 1 ftyette, of which the
Mayor for the time being shall, ex-officio, he President, but shall have no
vote except in the election of stich subordinate officers of said city as said
City Council may from time to time establish; and provided that in -all
elections of subordinate officers by the Mayor and City Council, the vote
shall be viva vocc, and spread upon the journal.
Wards.       SEC. 5. Be it further enacted, 4-c.; That said city shall be, and the
same is hereby divided into five separatesand distinct wards, and the said
wards shall be comprised within the following limits:
WARD No. ONE : Between the river Mississippi, the line dividing the
city of Now Orleans from the city of Lafiynto tel ne.ntrmor Torsey
street and the centro of Jackson street.
